Project INDEX: Indian Ocean Exploration on polymetallic sulfides

For the exploration work in the Indian Ocean, BGR is using a deep-towed high-resolution MBESS called HOMESIDE.  This BGR-developed tool allows us to acquire data of the seafloor topography, the seafloor backscatter signal and water column data to a depth of 6000 m.  While hunting for inactive sulphide mineralization on the seafloor in 3000 to 4500 m depth, also sites with active hydrothermal exhalation are discovered by chance.

Please click here to see the provided movie gives an impression on the different data quality and shows the possibilities of a deep-towed system.  Note that the mapped plumes in the water column data are not reflections of water-gas contact, but is detected due to slightly different densities (suspension & temperature) between the seawater and the exhalation.  The data from the movie is a collection of MBESS’s of different manufacturer in different formats and quality levels. BGR use QPS Fledermaus, FMGeocoderToolbox, FMMidwater and recently Qimera to visualize and analyze the acquired data with great success.

Find more information on the German exploration license in the Indian Ocean. For general information and contact check the official website of BGR.

Special thanks to Dr Ralf Freitag and Dr Kai Schumann, BGR for this content.
