Qimera and Fledermaus used for Patch Test &

Sea Trials on board R/V Bat-Galim

Sea Acceptance Trials and Calibrations for a new Kongsberg EM2040 installed on Israel's R/V Bat-Galim were carried out last February outside the port of Haifa, Israel.

A mysterious wreck at 30m depth was used as a target for the first calibrations and patch-test. The EM2040  performed flawlessly and the smooth data, brought to life with Fledermaus' visualization capabilities, beautifully portrayed the fine details on the shipwreck and the scoured terrain surrounding it. The wreck is nicknamed by the local community of technical divers as the "Leonid" and more information about it can be found here including a UW video and a sketch.

Patch test parameters were easily processed with Qimera's new patch-test tool, greatly simplifying the calibration procedure. Adjustments for pitch, roll and yaw were found with the auto-solve feature. Qimera was used also for creating the bathymetric surface during the validation phase of the trials, and conducting an on-sight cross-line analysis, ready for the SAT report.

Fledermaus software including FMMidwater was used to create these stunning images of the shipwreck, demonstrating the excellent performance and high resolution of the new multibeam systems and the surveying platform as a whole. R/V Bat-Galim science team has been enjoying the quality and ease of use of Qimera and Fledermaus, and will continue using them as mapping cruises continue. Qimera is presently being used to process all the new data acquired under the Israel EEZ mapping project.
