Qimera & Fledermaus process and visualise Nessie!
QPS took part in a survey with Kongsberg Maritime using Kongsberg’s latest AUV MUNIN in Loch Ness, Scotland.
The survey was to prove or disprove the existence of a 70 m trench that was reported earlier this year. The MUNIN conducted survey operations over 6 days and all the data was brought into Qimera for bathymetry processing. Post processed position, motion and depth data was created by Kongsberg’s NavLab program and imported into Qimera. High resolution (10 cm and 25 cm) DTMs were created as the AUV flies at a constant height of 8 metres off the lake bed. Backscatter and water column data were also processed in FMGT and FMMidwater.
The trench was disproved but in the process of the survey a contact was found and more lines run over it. When draping the backscatter on top of the high resolution DTM it was clear that the Loch Ness monster (Nessie) had been found. Though this one was a prop made for the 1970 film "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes”.
