QPS Client Spotlight: Bibby HydroMap

Established in 1997, Bibby HydroMap provides a range of hydrographic, geophysical, geotechnical and ROV survey services to clients mainly from the oil and gas, offshore renewables and subsea cables industries. A fleet of 5 dedicated survey vessels ranging from 14-27.5m work throughout the UK and Northern Europe, permanently mobilised with high-specification positioning and survey equipment from industry leading suppliers.

The company is typically involved in all stages of the project lifecycle, from initial site suitability and investigation surveys, Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) survey, pre-construction survey, post-construction survey, monitoring and pre and post-decommissioning. The acquisition, processing and reporting of bathymetry data forms an integral element of these surveys and QPS products have long been part of each stage at Bibby HydroMap.

QPS QINSy is the core software used by Bibby HydroMap for online data acquisition and integrates navigation and sensor data concisely from the onboard survey suite into one database. There is also an extensive suite of options for creating user-defined files online and database templates can be revised quickly at any stage to adapt to client requirements. QPS Processing Manager forms part of the QINSy console software suite, allowing for a smooth transition for offline data QC and subsequent processing, charting and reporting. The company introduced Fledermaus when it became part of the QPS software family, and quickly realised its stability as a processing suite for larger volumes of data as well as its 3D surface visualisation and CUBE cleaning capabilities. Following verification by the IHO, Bibby HydroMap fully integrated Fledermaus’ CUBE cleaning utility as a standard part of their bathymetry data processing. In addition, clients are continually impressed with the availability of 3D imagery and fly-through scenes available from Fledermaus.

Significant technological developments combined with Bibby HydroMap’s response and integration of such developments has seen the scale of projects increase significantly. Data quantities not only cover large spatial areas, but technological advances have influenced requirements for denser data coverage for enhanced seafloor ensonification and target detection. Consequently larger volumes of data are generated per square kilometre. This is particularly pertinent in relation to offshore renewables, as represented in the figure below.

Part of Bibby Line Group’s and Bibby HydroMap’s core values are to ‘be better’ and ‘be innovative’. These principles drive workflows for handling and processing increasingly large data volumes, and for enhancing their final product deliverables. The company proudly became the first QPS customer to integrate QPS Qimera into their Management System, and both Bibby HydroMap and QPS benefited from the Beta and pre-release testing period. Bibby HydroMap were able to work closely with QPS to tailor software capabilities, and also update their internal procedures so that they were ready to implement the software upon launch.

QPS Qimera has allowed Bibby HydroMap to realise significantly increased processing efficiency, data-handling and software functionality, as well as enabling full integration of 3D visualisation within the primary multibeam processing suite. Qimera has married the key processing tools from Processing Manager with the data quantity and visualisation capabilities of Fledermaus to form the basis of a one-stop processing hub. New utilities including the Wobble Analysis tool and the Time Series plot have provided extra dimensions for data QC and allow the processor to spatially review data and statistically analyse potential sources of error. The software also integrates full navigation solutions of precise post-processed GNSS and INS data and adjusts the resultant surface dynamically. Bibby HydroMap now have Qimera licences for all of their QINSy dongles, which means that once recorded, online databases can be immediately transferred to a Qimera project folder for immediate and cumulative data QC and subsequent processing.

Looking ahead, Bibby HydroMap are looking forward to further integration of the user-designed software tools within the QINSy and Qimera suite. The strong relationship with QPS helps to ensure that the company continues to provide a unique and market-leading approach to seabed survey.
