Jun 2012 - FMMidwater Update: Review of Functionality, What’s New, and What’s Coming

With the release of Version 7.2 of the Fledermaus Software Suite in Summer 2010, QPS provided users across many industries and areas of study with a completely new module for extracting and visualizing water column data.  FMMidwater became one of the very few commercially available tools for utilizing water column information, particularly within the realms of hydrography and geology. FMMidwater was based on joint work between IVS 3D and the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire. FMMidwater allows for intuitive processing of huge water column files, and easy creation of time-aware visualization objects such as beam curtains, beam fans, point clouds, and volume objects as well as export of ASCII based data.

Over the past two years, we have been working hard to improve FMMidwater and add even more functionality. With the recent release of Version 7.3, FMMidwater has become plug-in capable, providing advanced users with a platform for creating and running their own tools while also providing QPS with a means to easily provide extended capabilities. Several QPS-created plug-ins were part of this release, including a new export plugin to ray-trace selected water column targets as a refracted ASCII point solution.

This webinar will be lead by Moe Doucet, Chief of Software Research for QPS. In this webinar, Moe will present:

  • A review of the FMMidwater module (originally presented in August 2010), including step-by-step demonstration of using the FMMidwater tool.
  • A review of the shared project format.
  • A discussion of the latest updates, including an overview of the plug-in architecture.
  • A demonstration of some of the latest developments, including ray-tracing of points, and their applicability to different workflows.
  • Sneek peek into the road ahead for FMMidwater
